Takeaway:

People are tired of hearing about "AI", whether it's good news or bad. There's also confusion about what AI can actually do. AI is too broad a term and will be specifically renamed for its use and task. This can help us trust AI better because we'll know exactly what it can/does and can't/doesn't do.

The (too) fast rise in AI tools like chatbots, image creators, and coding bots is causing some backlash, mainly because:
• People are scared AI will take away their jobs and mess up the economy.
• AI systems aren't clear about how they make decisions, which makes people uncomfortable.
• AI features in apps and services can be annoying and intrusive.
• Too many un/ethical grey areas of how AI is created and used.
• AI wrongly and badly used can really hurt us.

So, what will happen next?

Over time new jobs will be created, but the industrial revolution shows that dislocation and poverty may be the first effects. AI might outdo less skilled workers, but those who are experts in their fields could become more efficient.

We'll see more focus on how AI is already being used in practical and unsexy ways in different apps and businesses. AI will become a part of the systems we use daily, not speculative use cases.

What might Bridgeneers do?

AI for Good Challenge: Launch a contest that invites people to submit their ideas for using AI to tackle social or environmental issues, such as climate change, poverty, health, education, etc. The winners can have turn their ideas into reality. The challenge will generate awareness and engagement around AI’s positive impact and inspire more people to use AI for good.
